Sound in Stranger Things

Today's lesson focused on how sound is used in Stranger Things, the effect it has on the audience and how it links to other genres such as horror, sci-fi and thrillers.

I've provided the different sound types below along with the model answer you had in class.

Remember to include your media terminology! You can find the clip we are focusing on for your essay in the previous blog post.

Model answer:

An example of synchronous sound is heard in the opening scene when the boys are playing Dungeons and Dragons. The character Mike says; “Something is coming. Something hungry for blood.” Although this is only said in relation to the game they are playing, it actually foreshadows what is going to happen in the series and the danger they will face. This creates an enigma for the audience as they are yet to see the creature but will be aware that something dangerous is coming. This is a common feature of the horror genre as dialogue is often used to foreshadow what is going to happen in the text.
