Production coursework - creating a magazine

The production aspect of your coursework has the heaviest weighting, 40%, and can have a big impact on your overall grade.

You'll need to complete different aspects for this coursework:

  • Research

  • Planning

  • Production

  • Evaluation

Your research should look at other magazines already on the market; what do they look like, what features do they include, prices, what people look for in a magazine, etc.

The research section includes:

  • Two annotated magazine covers (it would be helpful if you take two magazines of very different genres)

  • A questionnaire asking what magazines people buy, how often and what they expect from a magazine

  • The results of this questionnaire

  • Any other research - this could include you researching a particular magazine, when it was founded, its target audience, etc.

The planning section includes:

  • Annotated mood board including images which link with the genre and theme of your own magazine

  • An annotated sketch of your front cover (your final cover probably won't look like this sketch but you will discuss the changes and reasons why in your evaluation)

  • An annotated sketch of your contents page or double page spread (you can choose either one of these)

  • A mind map of your magazine key features including: Distribution, price, readership, design style and convergence

The production section includes:

  • Final magazine cover

  • Final contents page or double page spread

The evaluation section includes:

  • A 300-500 word evaluation of your production coursework from the research stage to the actual production; what you hoped to achieve, what has changed and why and what you think of the final product and how you would improve it.

You need to make sure that your magazine looks as realistic and marketable as possible to get the highest marks.
